American Football
Urbana, Illinois · 1997–2000 / 2014–present
American Football made space feel musical. Their first album lets clean guitar lines circle one another slowly, leaving enough room for trumpet, bass, drums, and the small hesitations inside a voice. The songs are intricate without sounding like a display case.
The project also became an accidental landmark. A modest house in Urbana entered the visual memory of the genre through the cover of the 1999 album, turning an ordinary Midwestern exterior into a place listeners could imagine returning to.
Start here for the patient end of the map: suspended chords, unresolved feelings, and the sense that a song can be both carefully arranged and almost weightless.
